Description

Full length studio portrait of 1030 Private (Pte) Mark Albert Buttel signed and addressed to his mother. Pte Buttel, B Company, 13th Battalion, a butcher of Redfern, NSW, enlisted on 28 September 1914 and embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAR Ulysses on 22 December 1914. He served at Gallipoli France and the Western Front. He was captured as a prisoner of war (POW) on 10 April 1917 at Riencourt and originally interned at Limburg POW camp. On 20 November 1917 he was transferred to Friedrichsfeld POW camp. After nearly two years in captivity he arrived in Leith, Scotland on 19 January 1919 and admitted to hospital. He left for return to Australia on the hospital ship Bremen on 4 June 1919.
