The Minister of Defence, Robert Hill, Chief of the Defence Force, General Peter Cosgrove and Brigadier Maurie McNarn, the Australian National Commander during Operation Falconer arrive at the captured Al Asad airbase in western Iraq. Senator Hill and General Cosgrove were on a tour of the Middle East Area of Operations and met with troops from the Special Air Services Regiment (SAS) stationed at Al Asad. The SAS, assisted by commandos from the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) took control of the airbase on 11 April 2003 and discovered almost 8 million kilograms of explosive ordnance and over 50 aircraft. The SAS and 4RAR operated in the Middle East as part of the Australian commitment to the Coalition forces assembled to disarm Iraq.
