Description

A briefing session for Australian Clearance Diving Team 3 (AUSCDT3) takes place in a converted warehouse at the port of Umm Qasr. The warehouse became the headquarters and accommodation for AUSCDT3 while on operations in Southern Iraq. Identified are Lieutenant Commander (Lt Cdr) Paul Paps Papilea (centre); Petty Officer Clearance Diver (POCD) Dean 'Jock' Campbell (seated, background); Leading Seaman Clearance Diver (LSCD) Darren Schubach (background, left); LSCD Troy Miles, Able Seaman Clearance Diver (ABCD) Ryan Shepherd, ABCD Jon Wilson (seated, left to right); Chief Petty Officer Clearance Diver (CPOCD) Peter Herbst and ABCD Michael Aitken (foreground, standing); and ABCD Kyle Atkins (foreground, seated). During Operation Falconer, AUSCDT3 conducted mine clearance operations, which consisted of shallow water Mine Counter Measures (MCM) and Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) in the Khawr Abd Allah waterway, Umm Qasr, the Al Faw peninsula, and later the Khawr Az Zubayr waterway. AUSCDT3 operated in the Middle East as part of the Australian commitment to the coalition forces assembled to disarm Iraq.
