Description

Inside the air traffic control tower at Baghdad International Airport. The control tower is operated by members of the RAAF Air Traffic Control detachment. Identified are Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Pete Hartley (left) and Flying Officer (FO) Andrew Chapman (right). The Air Traffic Control element was deployed to provide support services for airfield operations, and forms part of the RAAF Combat Support Unit operating in the Middle East. A team of thirteen RAAF air traffic controllers monitors over 500 aircraft movements per day. The Air Traffic Control detachment operated in the Middle East as part of the Australian commitment assembled to disarm Iraq.
