Description

Two commandos from the 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR) guard the entrance to Al Asad airbase. 4RAR assisted the Special Air Services Regiment (SAS) in taking control of the airbase from Iraqi forces on 11 April 2003. The Australians went on to discover almost 8 million kilograms of explosive ordnance and over 50 aircraft hidden throughout the site. 4RAR was deployed to the Middle East as part of a quick reaction force to support SAS operations. This would include providing fire support and search and rescue if required. In addition to this key role, the commandos provided security protection to Australian diplomats in Baghdad. 4RAR and the SAS and operated in the Middle East as part of the Australian commitment to the Coalition forces assembled to disarm Iraq.
