Description

Ground crew members from 36 Squadron RAAF complete maintenance on an engine belonging to a C-130 Hercules aircraft. Identified as working on the engine are Corporal (Cpl) Rick Kiely, Sergeant (Sgt) Paul Hardicker, Leading Aircraftman (LAC) Simon Chalker, and LAC Rodney Wilton. SRA Kennith Gilbert, was operating the crane, Sgt Peter Berecheree, Cpl Simon Holmes, Cpl Aaron Collinson, LAC Justin Tilson and Cpl Anthony Brown were also present. The C-130 Hercules is powered by four Allison turboprop engines, and can reach a cruising speed of 550 kilometres per hour. 36 Squadron RAAF was deployed to the Middle East with three C-130 Hercules and approximately 150 support personnel drawn from around Australia. The main role of the C-130 Hercules was to provide the bulk of the troop and equipment movement for the Middle East area of operations. The aircraft's ability to take off and land on short unsealed airstrips enabled 36 Squadron to complete aero-medical evacuations of wounded, and provide logistics support and humanitarian aid to the Iraqi people through Operation Baghdad Assist. 36 Squadron RAAF operated in the Middle East as part of the
Australian commitment assembled to disarm Iraq.
