Description

Dale Foster, a member of the United States Air Force on exchange with the RAAF, inspects a captured MiG 25 aircraft at Al Asad airbase in western Iraq. Control of the airbase was taken on 11 April by the Special Air Services Regiment (SAS) and commandos from the 4th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (4RAR). Almost 8 million kilograms of explosive ordnance and over 50 aircraft were discovered. The aircraft were concealed under camouflague nets or buried in large pits, with the majority escaping damage during the Coalition bombing of the early stages of the war. The SAS and 4RAR operated in the Middle East as part of the Australian commitment to the Coalition forces assembled to disarm Iraq.
