Description
Informal portrait of Leading Seaman Clearance Diver (LSCD) Paul 'Virg' Virgin, Red Team, Australian Clearance Diving Team 3 (AUSCDT3), on a tactical Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) patrol. Other members of the team can be seen around the trailer of their 110 Perentie Land Rover. A member of the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) AUSCDT3, LSCD Virgin was involved in the EOD of a 160 kilometre square area of potential minefield on the Al Faw peninsula. The area was cleared by AUSCDT3 over a period of ten days. Located on the peninsula were many key oil installations and the port city of Um Qasr. During Operation Falconer, AUSCDT3 conducted mine clearance operations, that consisted of Shallow water Mine Counter Measures (MCM) and EOD in the Khawr Abd Allah waterway, Um Qasr, Al Faw peninsula and later the Khawr az Zubayr waterway. AUSCDT3 operated in the Middle East as part of the Australian Defence Force's commitment to the coalition forces assembled to enforce Iraq's compliance with its international obligations to disarm.
