Description
An elevated platform, used as sleeping quarters by members of 2/4 Independent Company, at Guaupa Springs Camp. Later known as Commando Squadrons, the Independent Companies were special units comprised of small bands of volunteer soldiers selected from the AIF. Following the outbreak of war with Japan in December 1941, the 2/4 Independent Company underwent training at the Guerilla Warfare School, Victoria, in anticipation of a Japanese invasion. Under the command of Major Walker, the 2/4 Independent Company was deployed to the Northern Territory in March 1942, where they were based at Katherine, and patrolled the lines of approach into the Territory along the Roper, Victoria and Daly Rivers.
