Portrait of 29881 Flight Lieutenant (Flt Lt) Norman Percival Cooper, of West Leederville, WA, who was officially presumed dead by the Air Ministry with effect 29 January 1944. He was killed, aged 31 years, whilst on operations heading to Berlin, Germany. Flt Lt Cooper served with 463 Squadron RAAF and was piloting a Lancaster (HK537) from which nothing was heard after take off and it failed to return. The aircraft crashed with the loss of all crew. It was later established that when outbound to the target HK537 collided with an 83 Squadron aircraft and crashed at 0230 at Mjels on the island of Als, 2kms south west of Oksbol. All the crew were killed and they are buried in the Aabendraa Cemetery, Denmark. Aabenderaa is a town on the south eastern coast of Jutland, about 25kms north of the German/Denmark border.
