Description

Mount Royston at Romani, with Hod (oasis) el Seifania between sand hills in the middle distance. A desert landscape with a camelier and a couched camel at left, and a light horseman's grave marked by a cross and a four-posted enclosure being examined by a standing light horseman on the right. Lambert wrote: '...we visited the battle-grounds of Romani. Here two paintings were made and the ground studies' (Amy Lambert, 1938, p. 91). '...The Romani country becomes more and more interspersed with the remains of ancient palm-groves which in early days probably covered the whole of Northern Sinai'. (Amy Lambert 1938, p. 82) In 1925 Lambert borrowed the small panel of Romani with Mount Royston in the background (ART02704) for colour reference while working on the large painting (ART09556) between 1925 and 1927. He possibly made this squared-up drawing in 1925 in preparation for the large painting, but followed the topography and figures in the small panel since the two panels are very similar. The topography in the large painting is also similar. This squared up drawing on wood panel made in preparation for the large painting of Romani, possibly came into the collection with works from Lambert's estate in 1930.
