Description
Studio portrait of VX129406 Sapper (Spr) Donald Lascelles Vary, 34 Fortress Company, Royal Australian Engineers, of Ascot Vale, VIC. Spr Vary was serving in Rabaul, New Britain, in January 1942 when the Japanese successfully attacked from the sea after three weeks of air bombardment. The Australian garrison was forced to withdraw and split into small groups. While some managed to escape by sea, a great many were killed or captured. Spr Vary was listed as presumed dead on 23 January 1942, aged 19.
