Description
Studio group portrait of four members of the 9th Battalion. Identified second from left is 1526A Private (Pte) Harry Charlton, of West Wallsend, NSW, who was killed in action near Broodseinde Ridge, Belgium, on 8 October 1917, aged 21. Pte Charlton was mentioned in the Official History volume IV for his part in a 9th Battalion patrol that crawled to the German wire near Le Barque, discovered the trenches deserted, and reported the German retirement in February 1917. The Sergeant (Sgt) at far left is possibly 2759 Sgt William Wood Malin, who led the patrol to the German front line.
