Portrait of 170 Lance Corporal Percy Charles Herbert Black, 16th Battalion, sitting behind a machine gun. He enlisted on 8 September 1914 at Beremboke Vic. Later promoted to the rank of Major, he was awarded the decorations of DSO, DCM and French Croix de Guerre and was mentioned in despatches twice. He was killed at Bullecourt, France, on 11 April 1917, aged 38 years and has no known grave; he is memorialised on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
