Studio portrait of Millicent A Walker. Born on 28 October 1890, Millicent lived with her family on a farm property named 'Beachlands' at Gerringong, NSW. She was engaged to John Edmund (Jack) Buttsworth, of Bourke, NSW, who enlisted for service in the First World War on 10 November 1915, and served as a sergeant with the 30th Battalion in France. Whilst distributing rum rations to members of his platoon in reserve trenches behind Villers Bretonneux, Sgt Buttsworth was badly wounded by shrapnel. He was taken to the 9th Australian Field Ambulance, where he died of his wounds a short time later, on 8 April 1918, aged 27 years. Millicent never married after learning of his death, and kept several mementoes sent to her by Sgt Buttsworth until she died in 1967. The souvenirs Sgt Buttsworth sent Millicent whilst serving overseas are held at REL31862-4.
