Description
Portrait of Captain (Capt) Peter Jones, AM, RAN, in front of a binnacle (compass mount), on the deck of HMAS Kanimbla [II]. HMAS Kanimbla, a Landing Platform Amphibious (LPA), was Capt Jones' command ship during Operation Falconer, the invasion of Iraq. During this operation, he commanded the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Task Group, as well as American, British and Polish forces in the northern Gulf. These forces were involved in the clearance of the Khawr 'Abd Allah (KAA) waterway and bombardment of the Al Faw peninsula in southern Iraq. Capt Jones had previously commanded the multinational Maritime Interception Force (MIF) charged with enforcing sanctions against Iraq.
