Description
Studio portrait of Matron Sarah Ann Jewell, Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS), of Perth, WA. Matron Jewell enlisted on 21 December 1940, and was killed at sea whilst serving aboard the Hospital Ship Centaur on 14 May 1943. MV Centaur was made available by the Ministry of War Transport for conversion to a hospital ship in January 1943, for use in the New Guinea area. At approximately 4 am on Friday 14 May 1943, during a voyage northwards, Centaur was off Brisbane at Point Lookout, on Stradbroke Island, when she was struck without warning by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine. Of the 332 people on board, only 64 survived.
