History / Summary

The postcards, written in 1917 in France, are brief, commenting on the weather and sending good wishes to family. William was at the Gallipoli landing, later in hospital in Malta and went on to serve in France. The letter to "Sweet William", thus titled "since other forms of address are tabooed", gives details about her activities and common aquaintances in Melbourne. She mentions socks they are knitting, the doctor who is "breaking his neck to go to the war" and the Liberals being returned to government in the 1917 New South Wales election. She comments that recruiting "is getting wusser and wusser". Katherine Hilliard's letter is from Saint Patrick's Camp Malta dated 30 April 1916 and she is writing to thank Mrs Moore for the handbag she sent. Hilliard comments on accommodations and the increasing workload of the nurses. The soldiers in the photographs are primarily of Moore's unit. The photograph of three soldiers, including Moore, was taken in a hospital.
