History / Summary

Introduced into Australian Honours and Awards in 1991, the Unit Citation for Gallantry is awarded by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minster for Defence. The award consists of a certificate of citation to the unit signed by the Governor-General. Each member of the unit receives an insignia representing the award. For members serving with the unit at the time of the award, their insignia is distinguished by the seven pointed star of Federation fixed to the ribbon on the insignia. These members are also entitled to wear the citation once they have left the unit. For those members serving in the unit after the award, there is no Federation star on the ribbon. These members will not be able to wear the citation if they leave the unit. Recipients of this citation are not entitled to post nominals. At the time of writing, only two Unit Citations for Gallantry have been awarded. One was awarded to 1 Squadron, Special Air Service Regiment for their actions during Operation Falconer in Iraq, The other was awarded to 4 Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment for their actions during Operation Slipper in Afghanistan.
