Description

Sergeant Cory Gardner of No. 3 Squadron, RNZAF inside New Zealand UH-1H ‘Huey’ Iroquois helicopter NZ3802 as it prepares to take off from Honiara International Airport to fly to the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal. Four RNZAF and four Australian Army Iroquois participated in the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). Australian and New Zealand crews worked closely together on reconnaissance, transport of personnel and equipment to remote areas, and medical evacuation duties. Honiara International Airport, formerly known as Henderson Field, was built during the Second World War and played an important role in the battle of Guadalcanal. In November 1942, No. 3 Squadron, flying from Henderson Field, became the first squadron of the RNZAF to engage in direct combat with the Japanese.
