Captain Rachel Leal of 1st Intelligence Battalion holds a baby as she listens to villagers during a visit to a village in the troubled region of north Malaita. The area had been troubled by the violent activities of militant such as the Malaita Eagle Force (MEF), prior to the intervention of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). The MEF agreed to surrender weapons as part of the arms amnesty organised by RAMSI during August 2003, and MEF leader, Jimmy ‘Rasta’ Lusibaea, was arrested on 15 October 2003. Three police posts were established on Malaita by the multi-national Participating Police Force, with logistical, security and intelligence support provided by RAMSI military forces, including Australian troops under Operation Anode.
