A local boy watches as Australian UH-1H ‘Huey’ helicopter A2-487 lands at Avu Avu. A detachment of four Australian Iroquois helicopters was deployed to the Solomon Islands under Operation Anode, Australia’s military and policing contribution to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). They worked closely with New Zealand Iroquois helicopters from No. 3 Squadron, RNZAF, to provide transport, reconnaissance, and medical evacuation support to RAMSI. Avu Avu is located at the southeast end of the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal. The Weather Coast was scene of significant violence, due to the activities of armed militant groups, including the Guadalcanal Liberation Front, led by Harold Keke. A police post was established at Avu Avu, by fifty-three RAMSI police and military personnel, in August 2003.
