An RAAF Lockheed C-130H ‘Hercules’ transport aircraft passes an unidentified UH-1H ‘Huey’ Iroquois helicopter loader at Honiara International Airport. C-130J aircraft, operated by 36 Squadron, were used to transport personnel and equipment to and from the Solomon Islands for the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). The RAAF has flown four different models of the C-130 since its introduction in the 1950s; the C-130J entered service in 1999. The former Henderson Field, established during the Second World War and a key location in the battle of Guadalcanal, was renamed Honiara International Airport in September 2003. It served as the principal Air Point of Departure for the RAMSI aviation forces, including RAAF and Australian Army Aviation forces deployed under Operation Anode.
