Description

A local man and child stand in front of an Australian army tent, shortly before the official opening of a police post at Isuna, on the Weather Coast of Guadalcanal. Behind them is a radio aerial and sign saying “Isuna Police Station”. The Isuna police post was opened as part of the multi-national Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). Local militant groups, especially the Isatabu Freedom Movement led by Harold Keke, had been responsible for much violence on the Weather Coast, including forcing Malaitan settlers to flee the area, and killing a party of priests sent to the region. RAMSI’s Participating Police Force established police posts on the Weather Coast, following Keke’s surrender to RAMSI forces on 13 August 2003. On opening, infantry support to the Isuna police post was provided by 8 Platoon, C Company, 2nd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR), deployed under Operation Anode.
