Inspector Mike Wright of the New Zealand Police (left), and Riki Filmae of the Royal Solomon Islands Police (RSIP), on patrol at the Guadalcanal American Memorial, on Skyline Drive overlooking Honiara. The memorial, dedicated in 1992, was constructed in response to the establishment of a Peace Memorial by Japanese veterans nearby. The pylon contains the inscription, ‘This memorial has been erected by the United States of America in humble tribute to its sons and its allies who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the liberation of the Solomon Islands 1942-1943’, and is surrounded by four directional walls pointing towards the major battle sites, inscribed with a description of the campaign. RAMSI military forces held a service to mark the 61st anniversary of the battle of Guadalcanal on 7 August 2003. Honiara was the focus of much political unrest and violent crime prior to the intervention of the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). RAMSI’s Participating Police Force (PPF), deployed to the Solomon Islands with the intention of restoring law and order and strengthening and reforming the RSIP, comprised police from Australia, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Fiji, the Cook Islands, and Kiribati, with logistic and security support provided by military forces from Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Tonga.
