Studio portrait of 5216 Lance Corporal (LCpl) John Francis Vaughan Scheibel, 16th Reinforcements, 4th Battalion, of Windeyer near Mudgee, NSW. Prior to enlistment on 2 November 1915 as a signaller, LCpl Scheibel worked as a telephonist. He sailed on SS Makarini from Sydney on 1 April 1916. LCpl Scheibel died from pneumonia on 12 January 1917 at the Military Hospital, Fargo, Rollestone, Wiltshire, England aged nearly 24 years.
