Galt, David Taylor (Flying Officer, b.1914 - d.1943)
Collection relating to 400976 Flying Officer (FO) David Taylor Galt DFC who served with 461 Squadron Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF). Comprises a small pocket sized diary belonging to FO Galt, and a copy of a portrait photograph of FO Galt in uniform. The handwritten diary recounts his experience as the pilot of a Lancaster aircraft with 460 Squadron that crash landed near Amiens, France, in late November 1942 with no fatalities. The diary gives a detailed description of Galt's 18 day escape journey alone across France and Spain to return safely to England. The last three pages of the diary have a list of 'Observations' about his successful escape. FO Galt later lost his life in a flying battle over the Bay of Biscay on 13 August 1943. A transcription of this collection is attached to this record.
