Fox, Robert Eldon (Private)
Description
Collection relating to SX5313 Private Robert Eldon Fox, 2/3 Machine Gun Battalion, 1943-1945. Collection consists of an album containing illustrations of the different types of artificial legs Fox made for his fellow prisoners of war on the Burma-Thailand Railway. Fox also served in the First World War.
History / Summary
The illustrations were secretly compiled into a book for Fox as a tribute to his work constructing artificial legs for prisoners who had lost limbs due to tropical ulcers. Fox, a carpenter prior to the war, made the artificial limbs from bamboo and other pieces of wood he could scavenge.
