Kangaroo Recruiting Poster
Description
Designed and painted by Elspeth McConnel, this recruiting poster was distributed in the Brisbane river district during the First World War. Originally, the kangaroos were cut from kangaroo skin and atttached by pins, which were then distributed and sold for 6 pence and 1 shilling to raise funds for the war effort. When these were no longer available, McConnel sketched substitutes. Copies of the poster were appropriated for greeting cards at the time, and sent to men in France and Gallipoli.
