Description

Dark green polyester cotton brassard, fastening around the arm with two strips of black velcro. The top of the brassard has a slit, with a horizontal band of green tape behind it to allow it to be secured to the shoulder strap on a shirt. The centre of the brassard has a circular woven badge sewn to it. In the centre of the patch is the outline of a white dove bearing an olive branch superimposed on a representation of the Solomons group of islands against diagonally divided blue and green half circles representing the sea and the land. A white circle around this device is edged with blue and bears blue lettering 'REGIONAL ASSISTANCE MISSION TO THE SOLOMON ISLANDS/ HELPEM FREN'. The patch has a yellow border.

History / Summary

While serving as a member of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in 2003, Michael Serbatoio was attached to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon IsWhile serving as a member of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in 2003, Michael Serbatoio was attached to the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands (RAMSI). This brassard was worn by him during his seven months of service there. This particular type of green brassard was issued to serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel onboard Royal Australian Navy (RAN) minehunter HMAS Hawkesbury. Members of the Australian Federal Police were only to be issued with blue brassards. By being issued a green brassard instead of a blue one, 'Mick' Serbatioi was unique amongst the AFP Officers on his deployment. During his deployment to the Solomon Islands, Mick saw service around the entire Island chain, including time in the Shortland Islands group in the Northern end of the Solomon Islands directly opposite Papua New Guinea. Several pictures of him were published in the RAN Newspaper immediately after his return from service with RAMSI in 2004. Mick Serbatioi also served as an Infantry Platoon Sergeant in the Australian Army Reserve with the 4th/3rd Battalion Royal New South Wales Regiment in the early 21st century.ands (RAMSI).
