Private Hill served with the 2nd Light Horse Regiment and later with the 31st Battalion. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry and bravery in the field, having pulled a stricken French pilot from the wreckage of his aircraft under heavy fire. Later that year he received the Bar to his Military Cross, again for conspicuous gallantry and bravery in the field. He was discharged on 16 March 1919. During the second World War he served again in Australia.
