Group portrait of officers of the 13th Field Company, Australian Engineers. Identified is Lieutenant John Frederick Best, of Gladesville, NSW (originally of Windsor, England), back row, second from the right. He enlisted on 21 July 1915, embarking with the 1st Field Company, Australian Engineers. In October 1918 he caught influenza and recovered, but further problems were diagnosed with an aortic aneurism detected. He was deemed to need convalescence and returned to Australian in December 1918. After discharge he died on 21 December 1919 and was buried at Waverley Cemetery.
