Studio portrait of Mr William J Lambie, Boer War correspondent for The Age Melbourne, Vic. On 9 February 1900, whilst accompanying an Tasmanian Infantry patrol to determine the strength of the Boer forces south of Rensburg Siding, Mr Lambie, another Boer War correspondent Mr A G (Smiler) Hales and a group of approximately 18 Tasmanians and 30 Victorians, were ambushed by 40 Boer horsemen near Jasfontein, Cape Colony. When the Boers ordered the group to surrender, Mr Lambie attempted to make a dash for the safety of the British lines. He was shot in the head and died instantly. Mr Hales was knocked off his horse when a bullet grazed his head. He was taken prisoner and later released.
