Bugle : Signalman G A Jones (Albrecht), Headquarters Signals
Brass bugle stamped on the top of the body with the letter 'R', a broad arrow and the date '1916'. Underneath this is stamped 'J.W.YORK & SONS GRAND RAPIDS MICHIGAN. U.S.A.' There is a removable mouthpiece attached to the bugle.
This bugle belonged to Gordon August Albrecht who served during the Second World War as QX11951 Signalman George A Jones. Born in Bundaberg Qld on 23 November 1923, Albrecht was too young to enlist in the AIF. Changing his name to George A Jones (the surname of his step-father) he gave his birth date as 28 May 1920 and enlisted in Townsville on 26 June 1941 as a signaller with 9 Division. He also volunteered as a bugler, having played musical instruments at school. He served in the North African campaign, carrying the bugle with him throughout actions at El Alamein in 1942. Jones remained in the army until 28 June 1946 and was discharged from Headquarters Signals. Jones retained his stepfather’s name for many years, reverting to Albrecht shortly before his death.
