Transcript of the diary of Dr Phillip G Law, AC, CBE, Assistant-Secretary of the Scientific Instrument and Optical Panel of the Ministry of Munitions, Second World War. The diary covers Dr Law's field research in New Guinea and Includes copies of photographs. Also included is a photocopy of a report written by Law titled 'Report on tropic proofing of optical instruments in New Guinea', dated 24 April 1944.

History / Summary

After three years of researching methods of proofing gun sights, binoculars, and range-finders against infection by fungus which obscured vision, Dr Law visited New Guinea in February 1944 to test Merthiolate-treated binoculars and report on Army Optical Instrument Workshops close to the battlefronts. The diary details his travels to and from New Guinea, describing his activities, the army bases he visited, and the regions visited - Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Goodenough Island, Buna, and Lae.
