Collection relating to the Second World War and post-war service of 2400242 (NX163562) Private Allan Stanley Bird, Second Australian Imperial Force and British Commonwealth Occupation Force, Australia and Japan, 1941-1950.

Wallet 1 of 1 – Contains two folders of material relating to Private Allan Stanley Bird.

Folder 1 of 2 consists of 32 letters [including associated envelopes], one telegram, and two envelopes from Private Bird to various members of his family. These items are dated between 10 November 1941 and 28 November 1950, and were written during Private Bird’s service in the Second World War and the British Commonwealth Occupation Force. In the letters written during his Second World War service in Australia, Private Bird writes about his enlistment, living conditions, being on guard duty, meeting friends and acquaintances, training, daily duties at Sydney Fixed Defences, working with the 75 Australian Anti-Aircraft Search Light Company, seeing films, receiving letters and parcels from home, marching in parades, undertaking paratrooper training at 1 Australian Parachute Training Centre, and plans for his time after discharge. In the letters written during his service with the British Commonwealth Occupation Force in Japan, Gunner Bird writes about reinforcements arriving from Australia, recovering from an illness in hospital, and his plans for returning home.
