Description

Informal portrait of 93087 Sergeant (Sgt) Ida May McCarthy, RAAF, of Clovelly, NSW. She enlisted with the WAAAF on 21 February 1942, and as a professional Chiropodist (Podiatrist) her skills were utilised at RAAF stations around Victoria. She married her husband, QX738 Lieutenant Kenneth Alexander Blyth, 2 Anti Tank Regiment, in July 1943, and after a short honeymoon they returned to their respective posts. An early discharge was granted to her on 29 January 1945, shortly before the birth of her first child. She moved with her family to Brisbane, Qld, in 1947 and returned to practicing Chiropody. She was the first Australian to be awarded British registration to the Society of Chiropodists in the United Kingdom and was made an Honory Life Member of the Queensland Chiropody Association in 1969. Ida Blyth died on 14 July 2002, aged 86.
