Description

Viet Cong olive green cotton full length trousers with pleats at front and rear. There are two side pockets and one on the righthand side of the seat. The lower seam of the right hand side pocket is coming unstitched. The trousers have six brown plastic buttons forming a concealed button fly closure. The waistband has five belt loops. The pockets and internal waistband or lining are made of off white cotton, which is stained and discoloured. A faded and worn khaki coloured label is sewn inside the rear internal waistband, with the number '2' stamped upon it in red ink. The rear pocket is missing its button, and a button loop attached to the top of the pocket is detached on one side. The inner seams of each leg have button loops located approximately 55mm up from the hem, but no corresponding buttons are present on the outer seams. The trousers are generally faded and stained, particularly in the seat.

History / Summary

Part of a collection of Viet Cong clothing and equipment captured at 1000 hours on 17 April 1969 by an Australian Task Force patrol. This material appears to have been gathered by a (New Zealand) patrol of 3 Squadron, Special Air Service Regiment. The patrol, operating in the Binh Ba area between 15 and 23 April, consisted of Sergeant W J Lillicrapp and Lance Corporals R T Williams, K Herewini, D A Pewhaiangi and P Wanoa. At 0925 on the 17th, the patrol entered an old Viet Cong campsite, and material was found strewn around the area. Fifteen minutes later, two Viet Cong were encountered and killed. Other material collected in this action is known to have included a pistol and two pounds of documents, none of which came to the Australian War Memorial.
