Description

A group of unidentified Australian soldiers, part of the International Force for East Timor (INTERFET), pass a truckload of jubilant East Timorese whilst patrolling the streets of Dili aboard an Australian Light Armoured Vehicle (ASLAV). Displaying a portrait of Xanana Gusmao, the East Timorese resistance leader, and waving the flag of the National Council of Timorese Resistance (CNRT), they are celebrating the expulsion of the Indonesian Army from East Timor following the arrival of INTERFET. The CNRT is a pro-independence group whose members were specifically targeted in the post-election violence of September 1999. Gusmao was elected president of the new nation of Timor Leste in May 2002.
