Description
Troops from 23rd Reinforcements, 8th Battalion prior to boarding HMAT Hororata (A20). Identified, second row, kneeling between two sergeants, is: 7122 Private (Pte) William Henry Wildman. Pte Wildman died on 4 October 1917 and his name is recorded on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium. A kitbag on the wharf behind Pte Wildman probably belongs to 7081 Pte Thomas Samuel Lodge of the 8th Battalion. Pte Lodge was killed in action on 9 August 1918 and he is buried in Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, France. A kitbag on the wharf (far right) probably belongs to 7123 Pte John Herbert Willis of the 8th Battalion.
