Josiah Barnes collection of First World War negatives and prints
Troops of the 23rd Reinforcements, 8th Battalion prior to boarding HMAT Hororata (A20). Identified, centre with his kitbag between his feet is: 7095 Acting Sergeant Alfred Andrew Duncan. Next to him on his left, holding his kitbag, is; 6955 Private (Pte) (Acting Corporal) Reginald Percy Bartram. Pte Bartram died on 4 October 1917 and his name is recorded on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial in Belgium. A kitbag on the ground at the extreme right belongs to 6969 Pte Edward George Clements. Pte Clements died of wounds on 27 October 1917 and is buried in Grave 15A, Plot 22, Row H Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. He had previously enlisted on 10 November 1914, and served as 296 Pte Charles Rivers, with the Naval and Military Expeditionary Forces. HMAT Vestalia (A44), which sailed on 15 December 1916, can be seen in the background.
