Josiah Barnes collection of First World War negatives and prints
Soldiers from the 29th Reinforcements to the 4th Light Horse Regiment lined up on Station Pier, Port Melbourne, Vic, about to board HMAT Kyarra (A55), the troopship behind the group, that will carry them to Egypt. Identified is 3792 Trooper (Tpr) Thomas Frederick Richards standing right foreground. 3797 Tpr Alfred Walker is standing in the mid ground, behind the right shoulder of the trooper with a leather strap around his blanket. Fourth from the right and looking over his right shoulder is 3815 Private (Pte) Frederick Amos Lovett. An Aboriginal serviceman born at Lake Condah Mission in Victoria, Pte Lovett enlisted on 13 May 1917, served in Egypt and Palestine, and returned to Australia on 15 June 1919. He enlisted again in March 1941 aged 52 and served throughout the Second World War in the Australian Army Catering Corps. He was discharged in July 1947 aged 60.
