Description

Members of the No 2 Section, 3rd Auxiliary Mechanical Transport Company, line the wharf waiting to board the troopship HMAT Persic (A34). There are two drummers either side of the sergeant band leader who holds a large staff. Streamers stretch between the troops and the crowd farewelling them from the wharf. Identified: left to right, front row: next to second drummer; three unidentified; 13466 Driver (Dvr) Adolph Samuel Crossing, station overseer of Glen Osmond, SA and his brother 13467 Dvr Glenister Arthur Crossing, fitter of Glen Osmond, SA; At the right front is 13477 Dvr William John Higgins, of Highgate Hill, WA, bending over to the side, with his kitbag string in his hand. Dvr Adolph Crossing has a parcel wrapped in brown paper and tied with string sitting on the top of his kitbag. Behind the first drummer on the left is a kitbag belonging to 13491 Dvr John Molnotte Thompson, of St Helens, Tas. Behind the second drummer is a kitbag belonging to 13488 Dvr Parker Whitley Symons, of St Peters, SA. Dvr Symons was promoted to Lieutenant in the 4th Squadron, Australian Flying corps (AFC) and was killed in action 5 November 1918 in Belgium. (Identical image held at P00997.009)
