Description

Silhouette portrait of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) A H Brodie, probably 2nd Lt Alexander Hall Brodie. A cashier from Yarraville, Victoria, prior to enlistment, Pte Brodie embarked with the 7th Reinforcements, 6th Battalion, from Melbourne aboard HMAT Demosthenes (A64) on 16 July 1915. He returned to Australia with enteric fever in January 1916. Brodie re-embarked with the 13th Reinforcements, 29th Battalion, from Melbourne aboard HMAT Suevic (A29) on 21 June 1917. During this service he transferred to the 32nd Battalion. With the rank of Lieutenant, Brodie returned to Australia on 3 July 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
