Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Portrait of Lieutenant (Lt) J Loughnan, 23rd Battalion, probably Lt John Loughnan, 6th Battalion. A civil servant from East Melbourne prior to enlistment, Loughnan embarked with the 9th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Star of Victoria (A16) on 10 September 1915. During his service Loughnan was promoted to the rank of Captain and served with the 58th Battalion. He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) "for conspicuous gallantry and good leadership". Captain Loughnan returned to Australia in 1920. Loughnan also served in the Second World War. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks. See also P00620.004.
