For 12 years he had been a member of the 19th York Regiment and had served in the Boer War. After migrating to Australia he join the RAN and then transferred to the AIF. A civil engineer from St Kilda, Victoria, prior to enlistment, 2nd Lt Adamson embarked with D Company from Melbourne aboard HMAT Euripides on 10 May 1915. He transferred to the 24th Battalion and returned to Australia on 15 August 1915 suffering from neurasthenia. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks. See also DA08833 and DA08710.
