Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Outdoor group portrait of six soldiers of D Troop, Light Horse, including F Sidebottom (position unknown), probably 1281 Trooper (Tpr) Frank Ernest Sidebottom, a labourer from Katamatite, Victoria, prior to enlistment. Tpr Sidebottom embarked from Melbourne with the 6th Reinforcements, 13th Light Horse, aboard HMAT Ulysses (A38) on 27 October 1915. He returned to Australia with the 1st Light Horse on 25 March 1919. Frank Sidebottom also served in the Second World War. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had a permit to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
