Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives
Group portrait of four soldiers, one of whom is 2442 Private (Pte) Henry Allen Markley, 13th Australian Light Horse Regiment. A labourer of Bairnsdale, Vic, but originally of Bombala, NSW, he embarked on 4 August 1917 on HMAT Themistocles. He later transferred to the 14th Brigade Field Artillery. He died of pneumonia, aged 30, on 21 October 1918 and was posthumously awarded the Military Medal. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930's, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
