Description

Studio portrait of two Australian soldiers, one of whom is listed as C P Holey. He is probably 2369 Private Clifford Percival Holy, 60th Battalion from Deniliquin, NSW. A 20 year old postal assistant prior to enlisting on 3 July 1916, he embarked for overseas with the 5th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 25 September 1916 aboard HMAT Shropshire (A9). Following further training in England, he proceeded to France where he joined the 60th Battalion on 8 May 1917. After being promoted to Lance Corporal (L Cpl) on 16 March 1918, he was wounded in action (gassed) on 22 June 1918. Six weeks later, he had recovered and rejoined his battalion. L Cpl Holy arrived back in Australia on 5 August 1919. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
