Darge Photographic Company collection of negatives

Studio portrait of 4115 Private Bertie Gregson, 24th Battalion from Swan Hill, Victoria. A 30 year old labourer prior to enlisting on 16 December 1915, he embarked for overseas with the 10th Reinforcements from Melbourne on 7 March 1916 aboard HMAT Wiltshire. He joined the 24th Battalion at Pozieres in France on 5 August 1916 and two days later was wounded in action. That same day, 7 August 1916, he died of his wounds and was buried in the Puchevillers Military Cemetery, France. [See also DA14408] This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative. The names are transcribed as they appear in the notebooks.
